Ant Macari, Welcome to Frogtown, 2007

41. MOONSHINER’S DANCE BY FRANK CLOUTIER AND THE VICTORIA CAFÉ ORCHESTRA, 1927

REMIX: ANT MACARI, WELCOME TO FROGTOWN, 2007

Macari was interested in the diverse influences of this record, the enigma surrounding its production, the lack of information on Cloutier and his orchestra, and how unimportant this seems to be given that this is a record made about homemade alcohol during Prohibition. Macari’s work, which incorporates an old beer can, illuminates the inseparable links between immigrant communities and the perpetuity of folk tradition and music. The text ‘Welcome to Frogtown’ relates to Cloutier’s personal heritage born to a French-Canadian mother, and his move to the neighbourhood in St Paul, Minnesota known as ‘frogtown’ in 1927 the year this track was recorded.

Ant Macari lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne and specialises in site-responsive drawing and installation. Recent shows include DC Dusseldorf, Workplace in Gateshead, The Embassy Gallery in Edinburgh and NGCA in Sunderland.
