Christian Cummings, I Woke Up One Morning in May, 2007

60. I WOKE UP ONE MORNING IN MAY BY DIDIER HEBERT, 1929

REMIX: CHRISTIAN CUMMINGS, I DON’T REMEMBER, 2007

A letter from the artist describes the work: “This drawing was made during the night of April 15th-16th 2007. It was produced by a device that measures skin resistance and translates it into a drawing. Using motion sensitive goggles, the apparatus is switched on when it detects Rapid Eye Movements (R.E.M) and in turn produces a real time record of dream events detected in the form of a drawing. On this particular evening I was lulled to sleep by Didier Hébert’s unusual song ‘I Woke Up One Morning in May’. In keeping with the description of the dream, the title of this work is ‘I Don’t Remember’. Upon waking, one morning in April, I found the completed drawing in the form you see it in now and I thought to myself ‘this drawing looks like a song.”

Christian Cummings lives and works in Los Angeles, his work often involves the channelling of spirits through drawing, performance and supernatural processes. He has recently presented his work in exhibitions at the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City, CA; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles and the Santa Monica Museum of Art.
