15. BANDIT COLE YOUNGER BY EDWARD L.CRAIN, 1930
REMIX: CHRIS GRAHAM, BANDIT COLE YOUNGER, 2007
Edward Crain was known as The Texas Cowboy and spent time on ranches
and cattle drives. Coleman Younger was in an outlaw gang along with
his brothers and the James Boys, spending his final days in a Wild
West Show. The song voices his regret for his life and, as Smith writes,
“association with the James boys in a Northfield fiasco.”
Graham’s image references some of the historical, social and
environmental factors that may have influenced his actions: slavery,
the American Civil War, the death of his father, anti-slavery states,
the progress of the railroads through the territories, gambling, the
law and rough justice.
Chris Graham was raised in a Derbyshire coal mine, on a traditional
working class diet of chips, coal and baked beans. He continues to
produce drawings from the area left behind when the mining industry
collapsed.
