57. THE COO COO BIRD BY CLARENCE ASHLEY, 1929

REMIX: DIANE BARCELOWSKY, THE COO COO BIRD, 2007

‘The Coo-Coo Bird’ is Clarence Ashley’s most popular song. The song is a traditional non-narrative Appalachian lyric, made up of verbal fragments that had no direct or logical relationship to each other. It could be said to celebrate the cuckoo – the classical symbol of fickleness, false love and infidelity. Barcelowsky’s work includes all the key elements of the song and the non-linear composition reflects its lack of narrative. The ‘jack-a-diamonds’ is the central motif in the work, and the crab is the astrological sign for the 4th of July. The log cabin is represented within an Arcadian landscape with the larger than life cuckoo bird watching on and heralding the warmth and promise of spring.

Diane Barcelowsky is based in New York and is represented by Cinders Gallery. Her childlike drawings are new-folk influenced, often depicting situations that reveal an uncertain truth and vulnerability. She has also produced record cover art for the band The Double.
