WAKE UP JACOB BY PRINCE ALBERT HUNT’S TEXAS RAMBLERS, 1929
REMIX: GEAN MORENO, WAKE UP JACOB, 2007
Moreno describes his vividly colourful work as "heterotopic landscapes
where different, signs, systems and informational lines collide.”
Disparate information comes together to form a new whole, mirroring
the many heritages and cultures which contributed to the development
of this form of music. Moreno clashes the "psychedelic-folksy-quasi-mystical"
form that is often associated with Harry Smith with a stark image
of the social conditions that surrounded much of the music that was
collected in the Anthology. The photograph at the centre of the work
is of the Dust Bowl, the catastrophic storms that hit the South West
of America in the 1930s. Along with the Depression, the resulting
desolate landscapes and unworkable land caused mass migration, epidemics
of illness and famine.
Gean Moreno is an artist and writer based in Miami, whose visually
intricate work includes mixed-media drawings, collages and sculpture.
Recent solo shows have included Frederic Snitzer Gallery in Miami,
Derek Eller Gallery in New York and Curato Nivel Art Contemporaneo
in Bogota.
