REMIX: JONATHAN ALLEN, TOMMY ANGEL #X1C, 2007
In 1910, Pennsylvanian pastor and amateur conjuror Rev. Charles H
Woolston published the first book of 'gospel magic' tricks, or what
Woolston termed ‘object lessons’, visual illustrations
of biblical themes that appealed to the 'eye door' in the process
of trying to reach the heart. A parodic inheritor of Woolston's tradition
in an era of political misdirection and global fundamentalist conflict,
is seen here as a crypo-violent matinee-crooner intent on saving souls.
'Tommy Angel' is the performance alter-ego of London-based visual
artist Jonathan Allen.
Jonathan Allen’s work has been widely exhibited and performed
at venues including Tate Britain, the De La Warr Pavilion, David Risley
Gallery London, and most recently for the first Singapore Biennale
in 2006.
