Karen Constance, Little Moses, 2007

53. LITTLE MOSES BY THE CARTER FAMILY, 1932

REMIX: KAREN CONSTANCE, LITTLE MOSES, 2007

Little Moses was first recorded in 1929 by the first generation of The Carter Family, featuring A.P., Maybelle and Sara Carter on vocals, autoharp and guitar. By the end of 1930 they had sold over 300,000 records in the US. In this song the story of Moses is told, from his discovery by ‘the waters so blue’ to the departing of his spirit for heaven. In her work Constance has re-appropriated an image of The Carter Family with lyrics from the song. The use of red within the work emanating from The Carter Family portrait echoes the parting of the Red Sea by Moses as ‘the servant of God’.

Karen Constance is a Brighton based self-taught artist. She also plays as part of the Polly Shang Kuan band and as part of Blood Stereo and Ceylon Mange.
