SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN BY BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON, 1928
REMIX: MAYA MILLER, SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN, 2007
This is one of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s most popular songs and
was covered by Bob Dylan on his debut album. The song echoes the confusing
circumstances of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s own eventual death
as rumours spread that he froze to death after being disoriented during
a snowstorm. Miller’s line drawing style captures the haunting
ghost-like quality of the song and its relationship to Jefferson’s
own death. In a graveyard scene a tormented human head is merged with
a white horse, as the lyrics describe “I got two white horses
following me. Waiting on my burying ground.” The drawing gives
us the sense that we can hear the “coffin sound” and the
“church bells tone”.
