70. EXPRESSMAN BLUES BY JOHN ESTES, 1930
REMIX: MICHAEL NYMAN, EXPRESSMAN BLUES, 2007
This song is one of only five tracks in the Anthology featuring a
piano, so it is particularly appropriate that Nyman, one of the most
famous contemporary pianists, has created a work in response. The
track features a heavily rhythmic piano score, reminiscent of the
repeated baroque chords in Nyman’s own work. Nyman’s image,
a still from his film of a Tunisian train, shows a series of archaic
carriages coupled together, shunting against each other as they move
along the tracks.
Michael Nyman is one of the world’s foremost composers and performers,
best known for his collaborations with directors Peter Greenway and
Michael Winterbottom, as well as his soundtrack to Jane Campion’s
The Piano. He documents his international travel through film and
photography, which have accompanied his live performances.
