Harry Smith is an inspiration for The Matinee Orchestra, who have
referred to his visual artwork, alongside American, Mexican and desert
iconography. Taking the form of an email, The Matinee Orchestra asks
what Smith would have made of the internet, email and modern forms
of archiving. The use of colourful drawings and smiling faces reminds
us that Smith never lost sight of the beauty in the ordinary. Referring
to his death in the email would probably have appealed to Smith’s
anarchic nature, as well as acting as a reminder that he lives on,
as does the music he collected and the artwork he produced.
The Matinee Orchestra are a group of like-minded musicians and artists
who have made performances and recordings since 2001. Their self-titled
debut album was released in 2006 on Arable Records and they have just
completed recording their second album.
