Philip Taaffe, John the Baptist, 2007

50. JOHN THE BAPTIST BY REV. MOSES MASON, 1928

REMIX: PHILIP TAAFFE, JOHN THE BAPTIST, 2007

The head in this image is Coptic, from the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, which has a worldwide presence, primarily in Egypt and East, Central and South Africa. The work refers to the African roots of the Anthology and how a people’s collective memory persists in cultural lineage and its resulting expressions. The wavy lines, in addition to symbolizing water, can also be seen as sound waves, even as the lines of the record that this song was originally etched on. They also indicate a kind of trance that music induces.

New York-based Taaffe has exhibited his drawings and paintings in numerous exhibitions, including the Carnegie International, two Sydney Biennials and three Whitney Biennials. His work is in numerous public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Reina Sofia, Madrid.
