Robert AA Lowe, These Quills, 2007

35. OLD COUNTRY STOMP BY HENRY THOMAS, 1928

REMIX: ROBERT AA LOWE, THESE QUILLS, 2007

Blues singer Henry Thomas was in his fifties when he recorded for Vocation Records between 1927 and 1929. Because of his age, his recordings are one of the few examples of archaic 19th-century African-American music to be preserved. His unique musical style continues to intrigue, especially his use of the quills, a form of pan-pipe made from cane. Lowe’s work is a delicate line drawing of Thomas’ quills with natural elements emanating from them in a flow that reflects Harry Smith’s colour cosmology for the four elements of air, fire, water and earth.

Robert AA Lowe plays bass and sings in 90 Day Men. Lichens is his personal recording and performance project, his second album ‘Omns’ is released in May 2007 on Kranky.
