JAMES ALLEY BLUES BY RICHARD (RABBIT) BROWN, 1927
REMIX: ROSS SINCLAIR, JAMES ALLEY BLUES, 2007
Songster Richard ‘Rabbit’ Brown was from one of the most
exciting and roughest parts of New Orleans, known as the “Battlefield,
a neighbourhood so tough the police would not enter”. Sinclair’s
image signifies his connection and affiliation with the songs of the
archive and the singers. It symbolises the demented desire to make
art out of the melancholic and tragic splendour of living. He says
“It positions my own unquenchable thirst to create while all
around is collapsing in flames....”
Born in Glasgow, Sinclair has received several major awards including
the Basel Art Fair and The Paul Hamlyn Award. Solo shows include Galerie
KnapperBaumgarten in Stockholm, South London Gallery, CCA in Glasgow
and Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe.
