Royal Art Lodge, I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground, 2007

63. I WISH I WAS A MOLE IN THE GROUND BY BASCOM LAMAR LUNSFORD, 1928

REMIX: THE ROYAL ART LODGE, I WISH I WAS A MOLE IN THE GROUND, 2007

This simple, child-like image by The Royal Art Lodge, shows a mole’s head buried in the ground up to its neck, pink nose pointing down. The human body to which the mole is attached, is upright against the bright yellow background, arm outstretched, exposed to the world. Even with the image inverted, the head and the body are symbolically split, emphasizing the solitude of the figure. Many of The Royal Art Lodge’s words are stamped as a finishing touch, acting as a record of time.

The Royal Art Lodge is an art collective from Winnipeg, Canada, formed in 1996. The current members are Michael Dumontier, Marcel Dzama, and Neil Farber.
